CrimeStoppers awards scholarships

Each year Norman Crime Stoppers awards scholarships to deserving students who are also children of our participating agencies including the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office, Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, EMSSTAT-Norman Regional Hospital, Norman Fire Department, Norman Police Department, University of Oklahoma Police Department, Noble Police Department, and the 21st Judicial District Drug & Violent Crimes Task Force.

This year’s recipient of the John Dutch Memorial Scholarship is Savannah Mitchell. Savannah is a senior at Norman North High School.For many years Savannah has taken on great responsibilities at Cross Pointe Church’s Care Center where food and clothing is provided for families in the community. She is a participant of City of Norman Youth Council where she has gained a better understanding of the work required with many different City departments to successfully take care of our City. During the Pandemic Savannah recognized a need in our state and organized a blood drive at her high school with the Oklahoma Blood Institute.Savannah’s school activities include National Honor Society, Rotary Club, and DECA Club (Distributive Education Clubs of America.) Savannah is also enjoys art related activities and will be submitting one of her pieces in the May Fair this year.Savannah has been accepted into OU this fall after she graduates from high school. She will be furthering her education at OU with her interest in medicine and children’s services.

The recipient of this year’s Steve Cain Memorial Scholarship is Jordan Burks. Jordan is a senior at Norman North High School.Jordan has been active in the community, a few of her volunteering activities include tutoring and assisting Special education students accomplish their academic goals she also participated in the middle school Special Olympics as a student coach. During this pandemic she has helped her community by making masks for local healthcare providers. Jordan is very active in participating in Norman North speech and debate team, the orchestra, Latin Club, and National Honor Society. She also shares her acting talents with the Community Theater and furthers her many talents by taking tap and ballet lessons.After graduation Jordan plans on attending Oklahoma State University where she will major in English and Creative Writing while minoring in Russian. She also has intent to participate in the Greenwood School of Music.
